Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (‭Proverbs ‭4‬:‭23‬ KJV)

In the last capsule we started on the importance of our thought life in achieving and maintaining divine health. One of the feedback I got felt my approach was too harsh (and I thought I was being gentle and softly, softly), my question to the person was 'how would she have conveyed the same truth?' She eventually agreed that there was nothing wrong with the message and approach, it's just that she has never heard it presented like that. I agree that we can all improve in the way we present things but we should never lose focus of the substance.

Still talking about your thought life, Proverbs 4:20-23 gives us some crucial steps to follow, but let's look at the conclusion in verse 23. It puts the responsibility of protecting your mind on you. Interestingly what you are protecting are ISSUES OF LIFE i.e. matters that influence all areas of your life, in other words you can walk in health, wealth, freedom from demonic oppression and condemnation of sin. The only way you will ever walk in the spirit or become spiritually mature is to 'learn' how; they are not instinctive, or spontaneous or natural, that is why the Holy Spirit is a teacher (John 14:26, 16:13), and you have the word of God. They are meant to teach you to be spiritual and you learn using your mind which is the seat of your thought life. As you learn to think or walk in the spirit, it becomes a habit.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭6‬ KJV)

Unlike the flesh or spirit, your mind has the ability to be either carnal, (that is ruled by the 5 senses) or to be spiritual. It stands between the spiritual and the carnal, and both are vying for its attention . Romans 8:5-13 explains this dynamics, but look at verse 6 which is a key. If your mind is dominated by carnal issues it produces death, if it is dominated by spiritual thoughts it produces life and peace. You see why I said in capsule 12 'you are responsible for your thought life and your thought life is responsible for your health'. Your mind is like a valve, it can open up to your spirit, releasing all the goodness of God out and flooding your physical existence with divine health (Romans 8:11, Proverbs 4:22, Philippians 4:6-9). In verse 9 of Philippians chapter 4, Paul said these things should be learnt and practised. Unfortunately the modern church has inadvertently encouraged laziness of thought. That is why 'Prayer Meetings/Grounds' are filled with the same group of people, always expecting and looking for easy fix without 'taking thought'.

Lastly, the question I often get asked is what does it mean to be spiritual, or spiritually minded or walk in the spirit? I think this is a fascinating question which we would be looking into in the next capsule. (God's pill, smooth and small enough to swallow, easily digestible to release it's goodness)

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭11‬ KJV)

For the next few capsules we would be looking at what I consider as probably the most important and possibly the least considered in the life of most Christians... Our thought life. In fact we would be revisiting this over and over again. If you can master your thought life as a christian nothing would be impossible , healing will flow, demons will not find a resting place, it would be difficult for you to sin and material wealth will find you attractive . But because this blog is focused on divine health and healing that will be our focus.

In 1 Corinthians 13:11 the Apostle Paul said 'When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things'. To understand what he was alluding to, you need to look at the order of the said actions..speak, understand and think. That is what spiritually immature Christians do. They speak before understanding or think. In other words they are creatures of instinct instead of thought. It should be the other way round, THINK, UNDERSTAND , then SPEAK.

What you think is actually what you are or become. I know this is a common statement but there is more to it than that. Let's use sickness and disease as an example. Whether you get well or remain ill is actually to a large part dependent on how you think. I know a lot of people would argue and say they never thought of being ill or wanted it, yes that might be true but your thoughts make you vulnerable when you consider yourself 'as only human'. Ok let me explain, when you say you are only human, it means that is the way you see yourself, and if you are only human how can you walk in divine health that requires the supernatural . Whereas if you've spent time considering what it is to be a new creation (2Corinthians 5:17) with all it entails, you will realise that you are more than human , at least one third of you is pure undiluted Holy Ghost (Romans 8:9). Even in the secular the difference between the success stories and failures is in the way they think. Job spent enough time thinking disaster, it eventually caught up with him. (Job 3:25).
You cannot out run your thought life, and you cannot hide it forever, it's like pregnancy, it shows eventually.

What I have tried to do in this capsule is to show you that you are responsible for your health, whether you are well and strong or otherwise, nobody is to blame not even the devil. In the next few capsules we would look at the mechanics and dynamics of the what, why and how to think as a Christian. It just does not happen by accident , you have to teach yourself and I am not talking of any of those mind over matter stuff or Eastern mamby pamby. I am talking pure undiluted Holy Ghost!!!

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ KJV)

The above scripture is really instructive, it says the thief (aka satan) only comes to do either or all of three things 'STEAL, KILL AND DESTROY ' .That is pretty descriptive of what sickness and disease does. Whereas Christ says He came to do one thing and one thing only, that is give life, not just life but ABUNDANTLY. I really don't see the confusion that others struggle with, so when you see sickness and disease know that it's satan at work. Hebrews 1:3 says Christ perfectly mirrors God, and throughout the gospel you will never see Christ put sickness or disease on anyone.

In the last capsule we dealt with the first two sources of sickness and disease, The Sin nature or Original sin (Psalm 82:5, Colossians 1:13) and secondly the effect of personal sin (Romans 6:16). I will suggest you go through that to refresh your memory.

The third source of sickness or disease is demonic influence, or to be demonised. Whether you know it or not we are in a spiritual warfare (1Peter 5:8-9, Ephesians 6:12). Throughout the gospels you will see where Christ cured all sorts of sickness and disease by casting out demons or devils (Matthew 8:16, Mark 1:32-34, Luke 11:14, Matthew 12:22). Demonic influence can cause both psychological and physical problems. Typical examples are the Madman of Gardara in Matthew 8 and Mark 5 and the epileptic boy in Matthew 17 and Mark 9. In Mark 5:15, the bible says that the demoniac came to his right mind after the demons were cast out, this suggests that his madness was purely as a result of the demonic influence. I personally believe that most psychiatric illnesses (depression inclusive) and sexual perversion of any sort are as a result of demonic influence. Until these demons are cast out, the problem remains unresolved. There is a balance to be struck here, you must not go into the extreme like some do believing every sickness or disease is as result of demonic influence, discernment is needed.

Lastly and probably the most ignored or underrated (especially among 'spirit filled christians') is sickness and disease as a result of poor life choices or lack of wisdom. For example, if you are promiscuous don't be surprised if you end up with sexually transmitted disease, if you smoke you could end up with lung cancer, people who engage in dangerous sports are more likely to end up having accidents, gluttons will suffer ill health (Proverbs 23:2) the list is endless. The bible has a lot to say about making wise decisions. There is a reward for wisdom and there are consequences for foolishness. It always seem strange to me when I come across people who don't give thought to their decision, but want prayer for everything. It is a godly attribute to be wise in your lifestyle choices.

For bodily exercise profiteth little:...........?(‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ KJV). I remember a brother once came to me whilst discussing this very topic, he quoted the scripture above to belittle physical fitness. I pointed out to him that the scripture did not say 'bodily exercise does not profit at all'.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ KJV)

Before we go into the substance of our discussion, I would like to thank everyone who have in one way or the other given a feedback after reading these blogs on divine healing. I honestly do not expect everybody to agree with everything I say or present in these blogs otherwise there really would be no need for it. The one thing I would say is 'Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good'(‭Job‬ ‭5‬:‭27‬ KJV). The greatest hindrance I have come to find out is that most people cannot differentiate the dynamics of operation in the OT and NT, and until this is fully understood the two will be mixed together and that does not work, you just cannot do that. It's like oil and water (Luke 5:37-39).

Broadly speaking there are FOUR sources of sickness and disease, but they all originate from the Satan, make no mistake about that...he is the father of them all.

The first and probably the most pervasive is the effect of the original sin or sin nature. You see we live in a fallen world and things left to their own device will go from good to bad, order to disorder, even age brings with it disease if you allow it. From the day you were born death wants to start working in your body, why? Because Satan is the god of this world (2Corinthians 4:4). So the default state encourages deterioration in health, there is nothing personal in this. This is not as a result of any personal sin. Even some babies are born with defects, you will see example of this in John 9, where the disciples of Christ asked whose sin made the man blind, his or that of the parents? The answer Christ gave was 'neither'. Faulty gene gets passed down generations, accidents happen, the list goes on. But the truth is that you don't have to accept any of these, you can choose not to partake. Even David and Moses, people of inferior covenant realised this (Psalm 103:3,5; Deut 34:7) . We have a far superior covenant and I intend to live by it.

The second source of sickness is individual or personal sin. Romans 6:16 'Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you are ready to pay, so don't mess around with it, it is deadly. It is your spirit that is born again , personal sin will work death in your soul and body. In other words it will cause psychological and physical damage. That is the reason why Christ warned the man in John 5:14 about the consequences of sinning again. In Mark 2, Christ predicated the healing of the paralytic man on forgiveness of his sins. One of the reasons why we confess our sin when we pray is to stop its effect in our lives.

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (‭James‬ ‭5‬:‭15-16‬ KJV)

To be continued....

In the next capsule we will discuss the two remaining sources
