GOD'S PILL 2015: CAPSULE 26

SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY: THE SOUL

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬ KJV)

Let's talk about the SOUL. This is the seat of your personality, unlike the body it is immortal , it is not physical and stands between the body and the spirit. The soul is like a bridge between the two, the body that is seen and the spirit that sometimes referred to as the 'hidden man'.

The soul has three components, the MIND which deals with your thought life ( capsules 12-21 ), the WILL where decisions are taken and EMOTIONS which is the expression of your soul. Of these 3, the MIND is the most powerful or important. Your will and emotions are only byproducts of your thought life. Emotions are the spice of life, they are what makes us human but they are not to control us. They are like emissions from the exhaust pipe of a car, if the engine is in good condition so is what comes out of the exhaust pipe. Emotions or what we call feelings can be manipulated , what you focus on drives your emotions. Whether you are bitter, angry , troubled, disturbed or depressed is simply reflecting what your thoughts are focused on (Isaiah 26:3, John 14:1). Feelings come and go, they don't necessarily reflect reality and they are temporary.

A common misconception is that you cannot control your emotions . If this was true why would Christ command His disciples not to allow their hearts to be troubled? (John 14:1). This statement makes it clear that the choice was theirs. So we now know that the mind feeds your emotions and will.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭6‬ KJV)

As previously discussed , your soul (mind, will and emotions) stands between your physical body and your spirit. The mind (soul) has the ability to swing either way depending on the dominant influence , the spirit or body. Depending on which one exacts the most influence, you are either carnal or spiritual. Romans 8:6 is a cardinal scripture, every born again Christian has the opportunity to be either carnal or spiritual, it's a choice.

CONCLUSION
ITS A CHOICE, DEATH OR LIFE AND PEACE.

GOD'S PILL 2015: CAPSULE 25

SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY: THE BODY

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭23‬ KJV)

Last week we started on the above topic, the discussion was more of an introduction to the concept, an attempt to show that without a functional understanding of this subject our grasp of the word of God will be superficial at best. Everything in the bible presupposes this assumption. In this capsule we would look at the BODY,

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬ KJV)

The best way to describe it is 'man is a spirit, he lives in body and has a soul'. The body is what everybody sees, the physical aspect of you and it has the five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste) to help it function effectively. These senses keep the body in touch with the physical environment and any changes that may occur. Without these five functioning optimally, survival in the physical world is compromised. The body is our earth suit, like the astronaut requires the space suit for survival in space. Using this analogy, as the space suit is not the astronaut, the same way the body is not the real you. You body has an expiry date after which it returns to dust, not so with your spirit and soul, these two are eternal.

Because we receive constant stimuli from our five senses, the tendency is to think that that is all there is. This in a way is unfortunate because it might make you forget that there is a spirit world that you cannot taste, smell, touch, hear or see physically. When you are solely dependent on your five senses to the exclusion of the spiritual, then you are carnal, or ruled by your physical senses. With all these been said, the body has two important purposes that we need to understand . The first we have talked about, that is safety/survive in the physical world.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. (‭John‬ ‭5‬:‭26-27‬ KJV)

In the above statement Christ said the reason why He had authority to execute judgement is because He is 'the Son of man'. You see spirits without physical body have no right to exercise authority here on earth. They might have power, but they need a physical body to exercise authority. This is why demons and devils always seek to possess human bodies and they resist being cast out (Mark 5:9-12, Matthew 12:43-45). That is why the Holy Spirit lives in us. Everywhere in the scripture where Christ referred to himself as the 'Son of man' He was re asserting the fact that not only did He have the power but also the authority to exercise that power. The human body gives you the legal right to operate in the fullness of the power of God (Gen. 1:26-28, Psalm 115:16). When you understand this it makes you appreciate this great gift of the BODY but also free you from it's sensual nature and not be ruled by it.

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭26-27‬ KJV)

CONCLUSION
IT'S SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND!!!

GOD'S PILL 2015: CAPSULE 24

SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY: The introduction

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭23‬ KJV)

As a follow on to capsule 23 (am assuming we are agreed on what the 'works' is), to really be able to make any head way I believe a sound understanding of the concept of 'spirit, soul and body' is required. In all honesty I cannot imagine how anybody can claim to understand the word of God without approaching it from this view point. It is my firm belief that this is the key that unlocks the bible.

Except you spend time to grasp this concept and master it, the supernatural will remain a conundrum . A typical example is seen in John 3 and the discussion between Christ and Nicodemus. He found it frustrating to understand Christ when he was told that he needed to be born again. Remember that he was a ruler in the synagogue , he was interested in seeing the manifestation of the power of God but because he lacked the basic understanding of the concept and Interplay of spirit, soul and body, his ignorance and frustration was exposed.

Another example is seen in the sixth chapter of second Kings, when Elisha made the profound statement about the presence of the heavenly support available for himself and his servant. The situation must have been frustrating to both master and servant for different reasons . They were both operating at different 'wavelengths' so to say. The Angels were there all along, but lack of understanding of the concept of spirit, soul and body led to the temporary miscommunication .

In John chapter 4, the woman at Jacob's well had the same difficulty which was what Christ tried to rectify by saying 'God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (‭John‬ ‭4‬:‭24‬ KJV)', which is a response to the confusion she had about where God should be worshiped (John 4:20).

Hebrews 10:23 says we should hold fast the confession of our faith without wavering. Are we confessing because it is so, or confessing to make it so? Why do words matter? Why do we lay hands? These and virtually all the questions you will have can be unlocked and understood when you grasp the concept and live the reality of spirit, soul and body.

CONCLUSION
SPIRIT FIRST, THEN SOUL AND LASTLY BODY

GOD'S PILL 2015 : CAPSULE 23

THE CHALLENGE : DOING THE WORKS OF CHRIST

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭12-13‬ KJV)

In this capsule we would consider what the 'WORKS' are (please read capsule 22), by doing this it gives us a focus and something to aim at. To answer the nagging question 'What are the works?' Let us consider scriptural examples

And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. (‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭7-8‬ KJV)

This is the first recorded example of Christ sending out the disciples to do the works ( Please read the whole of Matthew chapter 10). This formed the pattern of His expectations, similarly repeated in Luke 9, 10, Matthew 17:17-18, Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18. If you consider Matthew 10:7-8, the 'works' in actual fact is a command in two parts. It is important that you understand that both are codependent, if not taken together each becomes in effective or meaningless. You cannot concentrate on one and ignore the other. The gospel has got to be preached with demonstration of power like Christ did, and 'healing, cleansing, raising and casting out' is only meant as evidence of potency and power of the WORD.

A. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

B. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received,
freely give.

To do the works we have to preach the gospel and make disciples ( Romans 1:16-17), but in preaching and teaching, what makes the gospel of Christ different is the power that is released to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out devils (1 Corinthians 2::4-5). The same Christ that gave the instruction or command to preach the gospel also gave the command to 'heal, cleanse, raise and cast out'. We cannot pick and choose. The reason why we are not effective is because we have reduce the gospel to just a theory that has no power. We have become motivational speakers without any evidence of power. The truth is that we are the once that hinder this demonstration of power because we do not expect (Mark 9:23).

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (‭Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭15‬ KJV)

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (‭Mark‬ ‭16‬:‭17-18‬ KJV)

We are doing just fine with part A, now we need to press in for part B, and there is no reason why it shouldn't happen, (let me rephrase that), we have every reason to expect it to happen, because the same person, Christ, gave both commands with an assurance .....'And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.'

CONCLUSION
SO LET US PREACH AND TEACH, BUT DON'T FORGET TO HEAL, CLEANSE, RAISE AND CAST OUT! THAT IS THE 'WORKS'

PS
I was and to certain extent still guilty of the same level of complacency discussed above, but I am determined to take a stand.
