And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭23‬ KJV)

Last week we started on the above topic, the discussion was more of an introduction to the concept, an attempt to show that without a functional understanding of this subject our grasp of the word of God will be superficial at best. Everything in the bible presupposes this assumption. In this capsule we would look at the BODY,

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬ KJV)

The best way to describe it is 'man is a spirit, he lives in body and has a soul'. The body is what everybody sees, the physical aspect of you and it has the five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste) to help it function effectively. These senses keep the body in touch with the physical environment and any changes that may occur. Without these five functioning optimally, survival in the physical world is compromised. The body is our earth suit, like the astronaut requires the space suit for survival in space. Using this analogy, as the space suit is not the astronaut, the same way the body is not the real you. You body has an expiry date after which it returns to dust, not so with your spirit and soul, these two are eternal.

Because we receive constant stimuli from our five senses, the tendency is to think that that is all there is. This in a way is unfortunate because it might make you forget that there is a spirit world that you cannot taste, smell, touch, hear or see physically. When you are solely dependent on your five senses to the exclusion of the spiritual, then you are carnal, or ruled by your physical senses. With all these been said, the body has two important purposes that we need to understand . The first we have talked about, that is safety/survive in the physical world.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. (‭John‬ ‭5‬:‭26-27‬ KJV)

In the above statement Christ said the reason why He had authority to execute judgement is because He is 'the Son of man'. You see spirits without physical body have no right to exercise authority here on earth. They might have power, but they need a physical body to exercise authority. This is why demons and devils always seek to possess human bodies and they resist being cast out (Mark 5:9-12, Matthew 12:43-45). That is why the Holy Spirit lives in us. Everywhere in the scripture where Christ referred to himself as the 'Son of man' He was re asserting the fact that not only did He have the power but also the authority to exercise that power. The human body gives you the legal right to operate in the fullness of the power of God (Gen. 1:26-28, Psalm 115:16). When you understand this it makes you appreciate this great gift of the BODY but also free you from it's sensual nature and not be ruled by it.

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭26-27‬ KJV)
