Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
‭‭2 Corinthians ‭5:17‬ ‭(Study in context 2 Corinthians 5:16-21)
In the last two capsules we looked at why we struggle to connect with our spirit, which in actual fact is the real you. The part of you that is born again, eternally redeemed, the part of you that is exactly like Christ (1 John 4:17), which is the only part of you that can truly fellowship and draw on all the goodness of God (John 4:24, 1 Corinthians 2:9-16). To recap, the first reason is because we are running a 'new software with an old programme'. In other words we need to renew our minds, the sin nature left behind an un-renewed mind which needs to be schooled in the new realities of our born again spirit (Romans 12:2). The second reason is because the only reference point or mirror for the spirit world and your spirit is the word of God, the more you look into the word the clearer you see and become acquainted with the spirit. There is no short cut, every other calisthenics like praying and fasting will only aid and assist, they can never, I repeat never, replace the word of God as a mirror for your spirit and the spirit world.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:1-2‬ ‭KJV‬‬
The third reason is encapsulated in the two verses above. Everything that Christ purchased by His death and resurrection is called 'Grace', it is sometimes defined as 'Unmerited favour of God through Christ '. The provision of the born again experience, the new you that is born of God, in fact everything that is worth anything falls under grace. The challenge is, you can only access it by faith, no other way. You must accept it or receive it as a gift. As simple as this sounds, in my experience this is the biggest stumbling block to flowing in the realities of our spirit (without exception we all struggle to certain extent). The tendency is we always want to do something to 'earn it' by doing something instead of 'receiving it' by faith. This is a central and unbreakable law!

“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭11:6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Romans 11:6, makes it clear , you cannot mix grace with works, they are mutually exclusive. When you understand this you will do everything including praying and fasting to enhance your faith and make you more spiritually sensitive, in full awareness that you can only access grace through faith. When you understand this it removes the burden and rigour of performance (Ephesians 2:8-9). In fact the more you appreciate and understand this, the more you want to fast, pray and study the word because all these make the walk of faith easier.
It's like the two sides of a coin, grace is what God has provided through the sacrifice, atonement and resurrection of Christ, faith is your positive response to grace.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:17‬ ‭(Study in context 2 Corinthians 5:16-21)

In this capsule we would look at the second reason why we are not connecting with the New man that is created like God in righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:24). In the last capsule we considered the first reason, which I have termed 'NEW SOFTWARE, OLD PROGRAM. Now the second reason.

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:6-8 KJV

I wish I have words to explain this, but I will try. In John 3:6-8 Christ was trying to explain the existence of the spiritual to Nicodemus. Two key things become obvious, there is no way you can access the spiritual through the physical, (John 6:6), secondly despite the fact that you cannot see the spiritual, it impacts the physical and not the other way round. The gist of verses 7 and 8 is that the physical is natural but the spiritual is supernatural. What this is saying in essence is that there exist 2 worlds , the physical and the spiritual, but the spiritual world is far superior to the physical or better stated it is the parent material for the physical (Hebrews 11:3). In the same way your spirit which is the new creation, created in the exact likeness of Christ is what sustains your physical body (James 2:26).

“For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:22-25, KJV

The only reference point or accurate description of your spirit is the word of God or what James1:25, refers to as the perfect law of Liberty. The word of God is the mirror of the spirit world and of your spirit, there is no other substitute . That is why attending to or paying attention to the word of God is called 'walking in the spirit '. The inability to retain this picture of who you are through the word of God is the second main reason why we struggle to connect with the realities of the New Creation. You must never forget that you are 'more than what meet the eyes'. There is a supernatural part of you made of the 'God stuff ' and you can only see your reflection in the word of God, like the mirror reflects your physical face. James 1:25, says , '“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues........(NKJV). This suggests that you must persist, it is present continuous. This is because there are no other reference point, secondly, the verb 'into' suggests that it is a subject with depth. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Virtually everything hinges on this, your prayers, fasting, confessions will only be meaningful only when you appreciate and understand this.

In the next capsule, we would consider the third main reason why we struggle to stand in who we are in Christ.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:17‬ ‭(Study in context 2Corinthians 5:16-21)

Welcome back. The real you, the part of you that comes from God or that is born of God is your spirit! So of necessity it is identical to God because it is made of God-substance (John 4:24), but your mind needs to be renewed to this truth. 2 Corinthians 4:16, says this born again spirit is renewed day by day. Unlike the body it remains constant and vibrant (Matthew 26:41), it does not degrade in quality or have an expiry date. The term spiritual maturity refers to the extent to which your mind has come to grasp the reality of the possibilities and capabilities of your spirit (John 3:10 )

As you realise that your spirit is identical to that of Christ and to the degree to which you grasp this, it opens you up to what I call the realm of God -possibilities (John 14:12). You have access to the thoughts of God (1Corinthians 2:16), Wisdom of God, Power of God, Knowledge of God, Love of God (Romans 8 , in fact everything God has is yours to the limit that you have the revealed knowledge (Ephesians 3:20). In other words, the process of the new birth makes you a GOD POSSESSED person. This is one truth that religion will keep away from you, but until you grasp it, you will be looking for everything that is on the inside, on the outside (2Timothy 3: 5, 7).

Now that we have an idea of what our spirit is made of, looks like and is capable of, why is it that we live short of this? There are possibly 3 main reasons why this happens, we would look at the first one in this capsule.

Reason: 1
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.” Romans‬ ‭6:6‬-7KJV‬

When we become born again, the sin nature is gone but leaves behind an un-renewed mind. This is what Paul refers to as 'the body of sin' or 'slave of sin' (Romans 6:6). Your old sin nature is dead, crucified with Christ but left behind a body called un-renewed mind which needs to be dealt with. Your mind before you were born again was under the control of that sin nature and thinks along that line up to that point. All of a sudden you become born again and the new spirit is inputed into you, but the old mind is still there without its old master called sin nature. The closest analogy to this , is like when you have a new software, but the old programme is left behind so it keeps disrupting the smooth running of the new software. For the new software to perform optimally you will need to delete the old programme (I believe some computer will even prompt you to do this. I am not an IT person so please cut me some slack if the analogy is not perfect).
The same way you need to renew your mind to serve your born again spirit (Romans 12:1-2, Ephesians 4:24). The old sin nature is gone forever, but it left behind a body for you to deal with. The reason why we struggle is that we keep running the new software on an old, corrupt, incompatible programme . Until you renew your mind , the supernatural influence of the God nature in your born again spirit is shut up waiting to be released because of the incompatibility.
Lastly, verse 7, is particularly poignant. “For he that is dead is freed from sin.”(I pray that God give you understand for this). Being born again we were 'freed' (past tense, done deal) from sin, when you fully realise this you will be free (present tense, active) from sin.

I sincerely hope this is helping you. I will recommend you study Romans chapters 5,6,7 and 8.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ KJV) Study in context 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

The above scripture is so familiar so much so that it does not have the impact it ought to have in the lives of many. Every time I study it, I realise there is much more to it than I know, for this reason I sincerely pray that God will enlighten and give you understanding in Jesus name, amen! Religion and tradition have conspired to water down its potency.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says when you believe and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9-10) you become a brand new man with brand new qualities. Look at the passage again, it is not an ongoing process, it is actually a done deal, a completed process, 'old things are not passing away, they have passed away, gone forever, never to be seen again, in its place the brand new has come'. In other words your old spirit that is dead to God is gone and you receive a new SPIRIT from Christ that is identical atom for atom molecule for molecule to To the Spirit of Christ (1John 4:17).

Verse 18 describes this as evidence that we have become reconciled (past tense) to God. The word reconcile means to harmonise or settle dispute or restore peace. So this spirit is at peace with God, not only that, henceforth no sin will be held against it. This is what it means to be justified ie to be made free from the consequences and penalty of sin 'just as if I have not sinned' ( I know it sounds too good to be true, you are probably thinking this is heresy. I dare you to study this passage in as many versions and see if you will not reach the same conclusion ). To help you understand look at verse 21, it explains how God was able to do this. He took our original sin nature and put it in Christ and inputed the righteous nature of Christ into us, that is what it means to be born again. Let me explain it this way, with your natural birth you were born into sin nature or nature of the Devil. When you became born again, you were born into the nature of God, called righteousness. So in reality the spirit in a born again Christian have free access and communion with the Spirit of God (notice that I did not say your mind or soul) 1 Corinthians 2:9-16.

We would come back and discuss more about the spirit. The challenge is that after you become born again there is no obvious change in the physical body and personality , so we ask ourselves 'Where is the change 2 Corinthians 5:17 is talking about? It becomes difficult to reconcile what we are looking at with what the scripture says, and if we are not careful we start doubting the veracity of the word. The reason for this confusion is because we are looking for the change in the wrong place (2 Corinthians 5:16, John 4:24, John 3:6). It is your spirit that changed, your soul(mind) will need to be renewed (Romans 12:2) your flesh will need to be quickened or put under control (Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 9:27). The body we can see and we are in constant touch with, similarly the soul, so where is this all important spirit, the real you and I, the one that changed, that is at peace with God, justified by Him and inputed with His righteous? The answer is what we would pursue in the next few capsules., when you become acquainted with what your spirit looks like, then you are looking at the real you that is born of God (1John 5:4).

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭23‬ KJV)

In this capsule we would be discussing THE SPIRIT. My intention is to show you a few things that are completely different from what you have been taught or know, my advice is do like the Berean Christians, take time to go and check the scriptures yourself (1Acts 17:10-11). Just because something is different from what you have been taught traditionally does not mean they are not true. This is definitely a game changer. Like somebody once said, 'if this does not light your fire, then your wood is wet'.

But first a recap of what we have discussed so far. The body is the external part of you that is temporary, your 'earth suit', just like the astronaut needs the 'space suit'. The body, is not you, it is temporary (2 Corinthians 4:16), when you exit this world you leave it behind. It has five senses for survival in a physical world. Secondly, your body confers the authority to operate the power of Holy Spirit. Spirits without body are like illegal aliens here on earth, that is why the Holy Spirit indwells us, and demons seek to demonise or possess people. The Soul is the seat of your personality, it is made up of your mind, will and emotions. Of these 3 your mind is the governor and your emotions are byproducts of your mind and will. Your mind is what needs to be renewed. Unlike your body that is wholly physical, your mind has the capacity to be physical (carnal) or spiritual in expression .

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (‭James‬ ‭2‬:‭26‬ KJV)

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬ KJV)

'Man is a spirit, he lives in a body and has a soul'. You will never find a more true statement than that. The real you is your spirit and that's a truth that must be actioned in your life if you are going to do the WORKS of Christ. Gen. 2:7 establishes the fact that this is the only part of you that comes directly from God, I say this so that you can appreciate the eternal quality of the spirit unlike the body that is temporary. James 2:26 establishes its infinite superiority to both soul and body, without the spirit the body is dead, ready to decay. When the spirit leaves the body we say the person has expired... that is, reached the expiry date!!! In fact the presence of the spirit is synonymous with life (Gen.2:7, John 6:63). So we have established the fact that spirit is the real you, it is Godlike , eternal and gives life or meaning to your soul and body. The question is why is it the one that gets the least attention from us? This is what we would seek to answer in the next few capsules, and hopefully reverse that attitude, because if this is not done we would struggle where we are not meant to (John 3:4, 9)
