Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ KJV) Study in context 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

The above scripture is so familiar so much so that it does not have the impact it ought to have in the lives of many. Every time I study it, I realise there is much more to it than I know, for this reason I sincerely pray that God will enlighten and give you understanding in Jesus name, amen! Religion and tradition have conspired to water down its potency.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says when you believe and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9-10) you become a brand new man with brand new qualities. Look at the passage again, it is not an ongoing process, it is actually a done deal, a completed process, 'old things are not passing away, they have passed away, gone forever, never to be seen again, in its place the brand new has come'. In other words your old spirit that is dead to God is gone and you receive a new SPIRIT from Christ that is identical atom for atom molecule for molecule to To the Spirit of Christ (1John 4:17).

Verse 18 describes this as evidence that we have become reconciled (past tense) to God. The word reconcile means to harmonise or settle dispute or restore peace. So this spirit is at peace with God, not only that, henceforth no sin will be held against it. This is what it means to be justified ie to be made free from the consequences and penalty of sin 'just as if I have not sinned' ( I know it sounds too good to be true, you are probably thinking this is heresy. I dare you to study this passage in as many versions and see if you will not reach the same conclusion ). To help you understand look at verse 21, it explains how God was able to do this. He took our original sin nature and put it in Christ and inputed the righteous nature of Christ into us, that is what it means to be born again. Let me explain it this way, with your natural birth you were born into sin nature or nature of the Devil. When you became born again, you were born into the nature of God, called righteousness. So in reality the spirit in a born again Christian have free access and communion with the Spirit of God (notice that I did not say your mind or soul) 1 Corinthians 2:9-16.

We would come back and discuss more about the spirit. The challenge is that after you become born again there is no obvious change in the physical body and personality , so we ask ourselves 'Where is the change 2 Corinthians 5:17 is talking about? It becomes difficult to reconcile what we are looking at with what the scripture says, and if we are not careful we start doubting the veracity of the word. The reason for this confusion is because we are looking for the change in the wrong place (2 Corinthians 5:16, John 4:24, John 3:6). It is your spirit that changed, your soul(mind) will need to be renewed (Romans 12:2) your flesh will need to be quickened or put under control (Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 9:27). The body we can see and we are in constant touch with, similarly the soul, so where is this all important spirit, the real you and I, the one that changed, that is at peace with God, justified by Him and inputed with His righteous? The answer is what we would pursue in the next few capsules., when you become acquainted with what your spirit looks like, then you are looking at the real you that is born of God (1John 5:4).
