“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.” Mark 7:13 KJV

In the last two capsules of this series, we would consider what I call THE TRADITIONS OF MEN. For you to get any lasting benefit from this series you need to pay close attention to and ponder seriously on these two capsules. I started this series by showing you that God wants us SAVED and come to the knowledge of the TRUTH. We subsequently considered the TRUTH as the person of the Resurrected Christ, the NAME and the WORD. These are life changing truths, but as I have often said, it is not what you do with these truths today or tomorrow that matters, but that they become a living concept, an integral part of your daily life not just a short time excitement, you have to know them in your 'knower'. These last two capsules are designed to do just that, to give stability to your Christian experience (Ephesians 4:14).

As a background to what we are about to discuss, let me say this, the first and primary strategy of the Devil is to do everything possible to keep you from being Saved. If this fails he will do everything possible to render you ineffective as a Christian, using wiles, cunningness and all sorts of diversionary tactics. Probably one of the most potent but subtle is what I have titled the TRADITIONS OF MEN, subdivision

Traditions of Men
Vain philosophy

(These subdivision is not perfect. I am using it because it is convenient and serves the practical purpose in this discussion).
In Mark 7:13, Christ made a profound statement, He told the religious leader of His days, that through 'their traditions they have rendered the Word of God ineffective '. Note that He said the Word, not words. Remember in capsule 47 we found out that this is the foundational expression of the person of Christ, the second person of the God Head (John 1:1-3, 14). What this means is that wrong tradition has within itself the ability to neutralise the manifestation of the power of God (strong statement!). Anytime a tradition runs counter to the Word it stops the manifestation of the power of God. This was the greatest hindrance with the Pharisees in the time of the earthly walk of Christ and sad to say, nothing has changed. There is still a subtle but unrelenting campaign against the Word even within the Church. These are in different guises, strange terminology, emphasis on fear and works, instead of love and faith, and many other things (2 Corinthians 11:1-4).

“And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.” Luke 5:37-38 KJV

You might wonder why this is so, how can tradition neutralise the Word of God? In Luke 5:37-38, Christ explains and this parable shows why. A typical example is the attempt to bring Old Covenant practices into the New Covenant as epitomised in the parable of the New Wine in the Old Wine bottle, the wine is spilled, leading to waste. When you do that, in essence you are are saying the sacrifice of Christ to usher in the New Covenant is imperfect and incomplete, it needs something extra. This stifles the power in the Word, because nothing can be added to what He did. See verse 39, the appetite to draw back into the Old is always so strong. The books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews were written to cure this. Wrong tradition is designed to counter the Word and even though you are SAVED, it does its very best to neutralise the Word that would manifest the power of God.

“O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?” Galatians 3:1 KJV

As we close, tradition of men works like sorcery or demonic control. The Galatians in Paul's time, despite the fact that they have seen the power of God demonstrated in the Word, when left to their own devices, without guidance they reverted back to tradition. This was so frustrating to Paul that he described this act as foolishness and concluded that they must be under some form of spell or demonic control and cursed who ever is advocating such (Galatians 3:1-4, Galatians 1:6-9). That is what wrong tradition or tradition of men will do, it attacks the Word and renders it not fit for purpose. As AMBASSADORS for Christ you MUST put New Wine in New Wine bottle. ALWAYS remind yourself that you are an AMBASSADOR, don't imbibe the tradition of the natives otherwise you will ignore the power in the Word and would end up like them.

We have discussed the effect of wrong tradition or TRADITIONS OF MEN on the Word, in the next capsule we would look at what VAIN PHILOSOPHY does.
In the name of the Lord and the power of His Word, all of us at MinDGyM wish you a wonderful Christmas . Don't forget to link this to your social media sites.
