The Apostolic Benediction: Grace, Love and Fellowship
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:2-4 KJV
We would be devoting this capsule to The Temperature and Pulse check from the last series. But I would like to make a few observations in this preamble. I hate to say this, but in the last few years charlatans and actors appear to have hijacked what is sacred. The current trend gives the impression that the only thing that matters in Christianity is material wealth. Virtually every teaching starts or ends with 'get all you can, can all you get and sit on your can'. The balance is lost and the dividing line between Divine prosperity and Greed has become blurred. There is no strong foundational teaching anymore, most do not know why they believe what they say they believe, it is a sorry state of affairs. This trend has encouraged the evil twins of Greed and Laziness especially among 'Christians'.
For the avoidance of doubt, I am a firm, unrepentant and unapologetic believer in financial freedom and abundance that is what the Word guarantees. In fact I believe the root word for salvation applies to 4 cardinal aspects of our lives: Forgiveness and freedom from condemnation of Sin, Deliverance from demonic control, Divine Health/healing and Material wealth. But the beauty is in the balance! I see a lot of confused and frustrated folks that have become prey, because they lack the fundamentals. This is not new, see 2 Timothy 4:2-4. We now have a generation that would prefer to be entertained than be edified; they get carried away by the melody and ignore the lyrics. But look at the antidote, 'Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine'. why? 'For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto FABLES' (myths and man-made fictions).
Unfortunately, this perversion has cheapened and adulterated the gospel and given the secular justification to make jest of what we hold dear and sacred. Why? Because it appears to them that despite the fine words, the bottom line is the same as theirs......Money! I say no, not so, we have much more to give, we are the New Creations (1 Peter 2:9). The fundamentals need to be taught.
I sincerely hope these words have encouraged you. Now it's time to consider some simple questions with respect to our last series.
Grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ
  • Can you remember the three cardinal points we discussed in the introduction?
  • Why do you think grace was the first functional expression?
  • Contrast the message of Christ with that of Moses (John 1:17)
  • Why is Grace the practical expression of love?

The Love of God, the Father
  • What is the Greek word for this Love?
  • Why do you think this Love never fails?(1Corinthians 13:8,13, 1 John 4:16)
  • Is this Love absolute (that is unconditional) or relative?
  • What is the interaction between Love and Faith? (Galatians 5:6)

Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
  • What is the difference between the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the Old and the New Covenants? (John 14:16-17, 1 John 2:27, Hebrews 13:5)
  • Why did Christ refer to the Holy Spirit as 'another Comforter'? (John 14:16)
  • List some of the advantages of the Fellowship with Holy Spirit?
  • What are the three practical expressions of the Godhead? (2Corinthians 13:14)

I pray that the series on Apostolic Benediction has opened your eyes to something new. That these words will never be empty again, they will breathe the very life of God according to the original intention.
The preamble for this Temperature and Pulse check is intended to set the tone for the next series. “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” John 16:7-8 KJV

Welcome back, in this capsule we would conclude the discussion on the The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit, the third functional expression of The Apostolic Benediction. We have discussed a lot, it is practically impossible to do an adequate recap in the space available (I would plead with you to revisit the earlier capsules in this series). With that being said, let me summarise our discussion on the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit with two cardinal statements. (Please bear with me this capsule will be long but worth it, this one is a 'keeper')

The first is that, without a working understanding of this Fellowship, you cannot be an EFFECTIVE Christian. Love and Grace would not be a practical experience. Despite the fact that you are a New Creation, your approach to life's challenges will be purely humanistic.

The second statement is that, God needs us to have this Fellowship to express Himself here on earth (Ephesians 3:20, Acts 1:8, Acts 10:38). For some reasons, religion has downplayed and undercut this crucial truth. Remember God is a Spirit, He requires a willing human vessel to operate here on earth. Spirits without a physical body don't have a legal right to operate here on earth! That is why the Holy Spirit is in us, on the flip side that is why demons always seek to possess people. This is so important, only entities with physical human body have authority here on earth, and that is one of the reasons why God had to come as man to redeem us (John 5, 1 Timothy 3:16, Genesis 1:28, Psalm 115:16)

“Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” John 16:9-11 KJV

As promised, let's turn our attention to John 16:7-11 as we end this series. In verses 7-8, Christ told the disciples that it is to their benefit that He should leave, explaining that this void would be filled by the Holy Spirit who will do three things, reproved the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgement. Christ in order to avoid wrong interpretation and misunderstanding of these three aspects of the general ministry of the Holy Spirit explained each in the right context in verses 9-11.

The first is that He would reprove the world of SIN, because THEY believe not on Christ. The two key words are Sin (singular, not sins) and They. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of one sin only, the sin of rejection of Christ, every other thing is secondary. That is the whole essence of redemption, hence the word They. Christians are not perfect but are redeemed, so this first aspect is directed towards unbelievers, They, not us!

The second aspect is directed at the New Creations. The Holy Spirit will remind us of our righteousness (right standing) with God, because He, Christ would no longer be there to do that. The primary job of Satan is to deceive us by bringing condemnation (Romans 8:1), the Holy Spirit counters by reminding us that we are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Anytime you feel condemned, it is not the Holy Spirit, He encourages, comforts, Helps, intercedes and reminds us of our right standing with God.

Lastly, 'of judgment, because the prince of this world (Satan) is judged (past tense). This tells you that the fate of Satan is sealed, he is hell bound. Once you know this you can always remind him of his future in the lake fire. This is a silencer and he knows it.

There is so much more to discuss but we must bring this series to rest for now. My prayer is that the next time you confess the Apostolic Benediction it will have the freshness and vigour that is imbued in those three functional expression of the Triune God. It's a reminder that we are not ordinary, we are special people equip for success because we are never alone. We have Grace, the abundant provision of Christ. The unconditional Love of the Father and Fellowship with Holy Spirit always.

WE would have our Temperature and Pulse Check next. For those who have been blessed by this series don't forget to link MinDGyM to your social media sites.

“All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” John 16:15 KJV

In the last capsule we had an introduction into the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit, the third functional expression of the God head. Some of what we discussed show that through this Fellowship we have an unparalleled advantage as New Creation. Through this Fellowship we have an understanding into the deep things of God, which subsequently makes us fit for purpose and service.

Contrary to common logic, Christ told the disciples that they had more to gain through this Fellowship, than with His own physical presence (I wish I had space to explain this). John 16:15, puts everything in a nutshell, Christ, redeemed us and made Grace available. The Holy Spirit enables us to partake of this provision of Grace. Now you see why this Fellowship is mentioned last in the Apostolic Benediction. Grace is the product of Love, which we can now enjoy through the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Remember that for the New Creation, the presence of the Holy Spirit is woven into our spiritual DNA. The Holy Spirit is WITHUS, IN US, FOREVER, we are anointed and this anointing abides! (1 John 2:27, John 14:16, Hebrews 13:5). What we need to do is walk in the consciousness and awareness, that is what is called KOINONIA: Fellowship, Partnership, Communion, Intercourse. Again, this cannot be exhaustive, but please follow me closely.

“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 KJV (in context 1 Corinthians 2:9-16)

Remember our discussions on the New Creation. Always keep in view that God is a Spirit and He desires to communicate with you, Spirit (Holy Spirit) to spirit (John 4:24, John 3:6). This principle is re-emphasised in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11. Verse 12 says the reason why we Fellowship with the Holy Spirit is that ' We MIGHT KNOW the things that have been freely given to us of God'. God wants us to know even the deep things but He can only do it Spirit to spirit when we Fellowship with Him. In other words, the Holy Spirit receives these things and then download them into our spirit through Fellowship. Let's look at some of these things

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26 KJV

The New Creation is designed to know all things and even when we forget, the Holy Spirit brings it to our remembrance (1John 2:20, 27). This sounds far fetched but it is true and we need to reach for it. The spiritual is governed by laws. We are not meant to be confused or fearful, faith always flow when there is knowledge (Romans 10:17).

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:13 KJV

When we Fellowship with the Holy Spirit, the future is not scary. Things should not take us by surprise (1 Thessalonians 5:1-4). We are not supposed to act on instinct alone, that is the low life. Our actions and way of life should be based on knowledge.

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
Romans 8:26-27 KJV (in context Romans 8:26-28)

Praying based on head knowledge (or human understanding) only, has its limitations! When we Fellowship in prayer with the Holy Spirit these inadequacy are dealt with through the intercession of the Holy Spirit because He knows the perfect will of the God Head (1 Corinthians 2:10-11, 1 Corinthians 14:2). In other words the Holy Spirit takes hold within us to move us from the visible to the invisible realm, this makes prayer efficient and effective. (Romans 8:28 is contingent on the two previous verses and must never be taken out of context). This is what Paul describes as praying the mysteries in 1 Corinthians 14:2.

Lastly as we close, those who complain of boredom have not come to appreciate the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit. I like to submit that idleness is at the root of most mischief among Christians. There is much that can be made available to us if only we know how to cultivate the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit. We will wrap everything up in the next capsule, and in rounding up, I hope to discuss John 14:8-11, it will completely change your thinking.

I will encourage you to always spend time to consider the bible references, you will be glad you did. They make everything come alive in your spirit. Continue to spread the word, link MinDGyM to your social media sites.,, @FBIMindgym

“Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” 1 Corinthians 12:3 KJV

We have now come to the third functional expression of The Godhead as seen in the APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION.

A quick recap however, in the introduction I shared three cardinal thoughts. The first is that you should maintain the original intent and potency of the pronouncement, don't add MAY, it is unnecessary, unhelpful and redundant. The Apostolic Benediction is a reminder of what we have available always, so there is no reason to feel alone or exposed, never! Lastly, it helps to comprehend the working of the different manifestations of the Trinity. Please go through the four previous capsules to bring yourself up to date or refresh your mind. The most common feedback, I have received so far is that some modern translations of the bible have MAY in 2 Corinthians 13:14. This is an over translation, you will not find it in the original Greek text. I generally do not pass comments on the individual's preference of version (bible translation) in an open forum, but I will be happy to do so with a closed audience. However, as a general comment some of the modern translations indulge in over translation and paraphrasing, hence I would not recommend them as your primary study bible. In this capsule we will start our discussion on the FELLOWSHIP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

“I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:12-13 KJV

If Grace is the practical demonstration of the Love of the Father, Fellowship of the Holy Spirit reveals the true meaning of Grace and Love. It is impossible, I repeat impossible to understand the word of God without the help and inspiration of the Holy (1 Corinthians 12:3). The primary function of the Holy Spirit is to bring into manifestation the intentions of the Triune God (Luke 1:35-37). In John 16:12, Christ said there were things He would have loved to teach His disciples but without the guidance of the Holy Spirit they could not understand. In Verse 7 of the same chapter, He said it was to their advantage that He was leaving. Why? Because it will give them access to the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:4-5, Christ instructed them to wait for the Holy Spirit before commencing the spread of the gospel. These are profound statements that underpin the place of the Holy Spirit in the life of New Creation.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” 2 Corinthians 13:14 KJV

In 2 Corinthians 13:14, the Greek word 'koinonia' is translated fellowship or communion (partnership, joint participation and intercourse). So what Paul was describing was a very intimate process and you need to have a good grasp of this. He wanted the Church at Corinth to realise that their individual relationships with the Holy Spirit does not stop after the service. In other words they have the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, this is what is called the anointing (Acts 10:38a). We would take a closer look at the benefits of this Fellowship in the next capsule. But for now let me say this, Fellowship of the Holy Spirit gives you an unparalleled advantage (John 16:7), Gives you understanding into the deep things of Christ, that is, the provisions of Grace (John 16:12, John 15:26) and Makes you fit for service (Acts 1:4-5, Acts 10:38).

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
John 14:17 KJV

Unlike in the Old Covenant, the Holy Spirit is with us and in us because we are supposed to maintain intimate contact. In addition, He is with us forever (John 14:16). This is a concept that is not emphasised enough even among Pentecostals and Charismatics. In the Apostolic Benediction, Paul wanted the Corinthians to have a constant awareness of this fellowship. In the modern church, you often hear invitations to attend an anointed service. In my estimation, this turn of phrase is wrong and unfortunate. Any service or gathering is anointed because of the anointing (presence of the Holy Spirit) in Us (those attending the service). Not the other way round (1John 2:27, John 14:16). We carry the anointing in us, increased focus on fellowship with the Holy Spirit when we gather together makes us more sensitive to His presence and subsequent manifestations. Understanding this makes all the difference, it makes you realise that the Holy Spirit is available for fellowship always. The implication of this is huge, we would discuss the practical implications in the next capsules.

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” John 14:16KJV

As we close this capsule I would like to leave you with these important thoughts from John 14:16. Christ called the Holy Spirit, 'another Comforter', meaning that Christ had been the comforter up till then. The Greek word 'parakletos' is translated comforter, helper, advocate. When you cultivate the fellowship of the Holy Spirit you have constant source of comfort, help and someone who is ready to plead your case better than you can, just like the disciples had with the man Jesus, even BETTER (another Comforter). Think about that till we meet next week.

I sincerely hope you are encouraged. We need this more than ever, you must never lose heart or be fretful, keep your focus on the Word . Don't forget to link MinDGyM with your social media sites. You can also follow on @FBIMindgym on twitter.
