“Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” 1 Corinthians 12:3 KJV
We have now come to the third functional expression of The Godhead as seen in the APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION.
A quick recap however, in the introduction I shared three cardinal thoughts. The first is that you should maintain the original intent and potency of the pronouncement, don't add MAY, it is unnecessary, unhelpful and redundant. The Apostolic Benediction is a reminder of what we have available always, so there is no reason to feel alone or exposed, never! Lastly, it helps to comprehend the working of the different manifestations of the Trinity. Please go through the four previous capsules to bring yourself up to date or refresh your mind. The most common feedback, I have received so far is that some modern translations of the bible have MAY in 2 Corinthians 13:14. This is an over translation, you will not find it in the original Greek text. I generally do not pass comments on the individual's preference of version (bible translation) in an open forum, but I will be happy to do so with a closed audience. However, as a general comment some of the modern translations indulge in over translation and paraphrasing, hence I would not recommend them as your primary study bible. In this capsule we will start our discussion on the FELLOWSHIP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
“I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:12-13 KJV
If Grace is the practical demonstration of the Love of the Father, Fellowship of the Holy Spirit reveals the true meaning of Grace and Love. It is impossible, I repeat impossible to understand the word of God without the help and inspiration of the Holy (1 Corinthians 12:3). The primary function of the Holy Spirit is to bring into manifestation the intentions of the Triune God (Luke 1:35-37). In John 16:12, Christ said there were things He would have loved to teach His disciples but without the guidance of the Holy Spirit they could not understand. In Verse 7 of the same chapter, He said it was to their advantage that He was leaving. Why? Because it will give them access to the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:4-5, Christ instructed them to wait for the Holy Spirit before commencing the spread of the gospel. These are profound statements that underpin the place of the Holy Spirit in the life of New Creation.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” 2 Corinthians 13:14 KJV
In 2 Corinthians 13:14, the Greek word 'koinonia' is translated fellowship or communion (partnership, joint participation and intercourse). So what Paul was describing was a very intimate process and you need to have a good grasp of this. He wanted the Church at Corinth to realise that their individual relationships with the Holy Spirit does not stop after the service. In other words they have the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, this is what is called the anointing (Acts 10:38a). We would take a closer look at the benefits of this Fellowship in the next capsule. But for now let me say this, Fellowship of the Holy Spirit gives you an unparalleled advantage (John 16:7), Gives you understanding into the deep things of Christ, that is, the provisions of Grace (John 16:12, John 15:26) and Makes you fit for service (Acts 1:4-5, Acts 10:38).
“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
John 14:17 KJV
Unlike in the Old Covenant, the Holy Spirit is with us and in us because we are supposed to maintain intimate contact. In addition, He is with us forever (John 14:16). This is a concept that is not emphasised enough even among Pentecostals and Charismatics. In the Apostolic Benediction, Paul wanted the Corinthians to have a constant awareness of this fellowship. In the modern church, you often hear invitations to attend an anointed service. In my estimation, this turn of phrase is wrong and unfortunate. Any service or gathering is anointed because of the anointing (presence of the Holy Spirit) in Us (those attending the service). Not the other way round (1John 2:27, John 14:16). We carry the anointing in us, increased focus on fellowship with the Holy Spirit when we gather together makes us more sensitive to His presence and subsequent manifestations. Understanding this makes all the difference, it makes you realise that the Holy Spirit is available for fellowship always. The implication of this is huge, we would discuss the practical implications in the next capsules.
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” John 14:16KJV
As we close this capsule I would like to leave you with these important thoughts from John 14:16. Christ called the Holy Spirit, 'another Comforter', meaning that Christ had been the comforter up till then. The Greek word 'parakletos' is translated comforter, helper, advocate. When you cultivate the fellowship of the Holy Spirit you have constant source of comfort, help and someone who is ready to plead your case better than you can, just like the disciples had with the man Jesus, even BETTER (another Comforter). Think about that till we meet next week.
WE HAVE A COMFORTER, HELPER AND ADVOCATE. WE SHOULD FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM
I sincerely hope you are encouraged. We need this more than ever, you must never lose heart or be fretful, keep your focus on the Word . Don't forget to link MinDGyM with your social media sites. You can also follow on @FBIMindgym on twitter.
