THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Part 3)
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” John 16:7-8 KJV
Welcome back, in this capsule we would conclude the discussion on the The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit, the third functional expression of The Apostolic Benediction. We have discussed a lot, it is practically impossible to do an adequate recap in the space available (I would plead with you to revisit the earlier capsules in this series). With that being said, let me summarise our discussion on the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit with two cardinal statements. (Please bear with me this capsule will be long but worth it, this one is a 'keeper')
The first is that, without a working understanding of this Fellowship, you cannot be an EFFECTIVE Christian. Love and Grace would not be a practical experience. Despite the fact that you are a New Creation, your approach to life's challenges will be purely humanistic.
The second statement is that, God needs us to have this Fellowship to express Himself here on earth (Ephesians 3:20, Acts 1:8, Acts 10:38). For some reasons, religion has downplayed and undercut this crucial truth. Remember God is a Spirit, He requires a willing human vessel to operate here on earth. Spirits without a physical body don't have a legal right to operate here on earth! That is why the Holy Spirit is in us, on the flip side that is why demons always seek to possess people. This is so important, only entities with physical human body have authority here on earth, and that is one of the reasons why God had to come as man to redeem us (John 5, 1 Timothy 3:16, Genesis 1:28, Psalm 115:16)
“Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” John 16:9-11 KJV
As promised, let's turn our attention to John 16:7-11 as we end this series. In verses 7-8, Christ told the disciples that it is to their benefit that He should leave, explaining that this void would be filled by the Holy Spirit who will do three things, reproved the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgement. Christ in order to avoid wrong interpretation and misunderstanding of these three aspects of the general ministry of the Holy Spirit explained each in the right context in verses 9-11.
The first is that He would reprove the world of SIN, because THEY believe not on Christ. The two key words are Sin (singular, not sins) and They. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of one sin only, the sin of rejection of Christ, every other thing is secondary. That is the whole essence of redemption, hence the word They. Christians are not perfect but are redeemed, so this first aspect is directed towards unbelievers, They, not us!
The second aspect is directed at the New Creations. The Holy Spirit will remind us of our righteousness (right standing) with God, because He, Christ would no longer be there to do that. The primary job of Satan is to deceive us by bringing condemnation (Romans 8:1), the Holy Spirit counters by reminding us that we are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Anytime you feel condemned, it is not the Holy Spirit, He encourages, comforts, Helps, intercedes and reminds us of our right standing with God.
Lastly, 'of judgment, because the prince of this world (Satan) is judged (past tense). This tells you that the fate of Satan is sealed, he is hell bound. Once you know this you can always remind him of his future in the lake fire. This is a silencer and he knows it.
There is so much more to discuss but we must bring this series to rest for now. My prayer is that the next time you confess the Apostolic Benediction it will have the freshness and vigour that is imbued in those three functional expression of the Triune God. It's a reminder that we are not ordinary, we are special people equip for success because we are never alone. We have Grace, the abundant provision of Christ. The unconditional Love of the Father and Fellowship with Holy Spirit always.
THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TOWARDS US IS ALWAYS POSITIVE
